Dan Colen belongs to the new generation of New York artists known as the Bowery School, whose other members include Nate Lowman. The group, often described as art-world superstars, is composed by artists who perpetuate the legacy of pop art and appropriation, with Andy Warhol and Richard Prince as influences. Colen combines elements from mass communication and contemporary life experiences with the language of subculture. The result – in photographs, paintings, performatic installations and sculptures that feature Disney characters, gum and graffiti-like traces - is a personal mixture that underlines the beautiful and mystic aspects of everyday life.
