Message from the president

The drawing up of a report of management and contributions to society presents an opportunity to reflect on the actions carried out by the Fundação Bienal over the last two years — its projects as well as the internal and invisible processes that have made these projects possible. More than presenting numbers and data, however, this report seeks to show the ways in which art connects people, and the articulating role that the Fundação plays between artists, visitors, partners, supporters, professionals in this field, the public power, and Ibirapuera Park.

In 2018, it was ten years since a Bienal was held that left one floor entirely empty, evidencing the serious institutional crisis faced by the Fundação at that time. The actions carried out in the last two years show how much the institution has developed since then: on the one hand, it has regained its cultural leadership in the national and international scene, and on the other, it has developed practices of management and governance that ensure its ethical and professional operation.

The consolidation of this movement, begun ten years ago, and the opening to new horizons constitute the greatest legacy of this management: the two-year period 2017–2018 symbolizes the definitive surpassing of that moment of institutional crisis and points to the beginning of a new cycle for the Fundação Bienal, in which it finds itself prepared to enlarge its relationships with cultural life both in Brazil and abroad.

In the management sphere, nothing represents this better than the development and implementation, in 2018, of the institution’s Code of Conduct, an innovative document in the cultural field that treats on the principles and policies concerning the relationships between everyone involved with the Fundação. Above all, it establishes that institutional interests should always prevail over personal ones, stimulating ethical culture in the Fundação’s relationship with the various social agents that are essential for the fulfillment of its mission.

The projects developed in this two-year period attest to their potential themselves. The traveling shows of the 32nd Bienal were held in 11 cities in Brazil and 2 abroad, with a record 648,500 visitors. The official representation of Brazil at the 57th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia was conferred an honorable mention from the show’s international jury, while the Brazilian representation at the 16th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia innovated by adopting the model of public participation for the selection of projects. Ultimately, with 736 thousand visitors and 59 thousand participants in educational actions, the 33rd Bienal de São Paulo – Affective Affinities proposed a self-reflection on how the exhibition is organized, at the same time that it called the public’s attention to an urgent issue of our times: attention.

All these initiatives, detailed below, were only possible, clearly, due to the enthusiasm and generosity of the Fundação’s extensive network of sponsors, supporters and partners. A project of the Bienal’s size is, by nature, collaborative. And, after all, it is only in the encounter with art, coupled with the diversity of people and communities intercrossed within the Bienal Pavilion and in the far-flung actions the institution promotes, that the Fundação’s goals are realizable.
